At the height of the Charismatic Movement in the 1970s I had four favorite bible teachers: James Beall, Ern Baxter, Malcolm Smith, and Bob Mumford..
Baxter went on to his eternal reward in 1993. Smith, twice-divorced, maintains a ministry out of San Antonio that I do not take interest in. Beall turned 84 this month and is pastor emeritus of Bethesda Christian Church in Sterling Heights, Michigan.
[My review of Beall's book, Straight Talk about the Holy Spirit, can be read here.]
Mumford, now 78 and living in Ft. Lauderdale, is head --- along with his son, Eric --- of a ministry called Lifechangers. That ministry provides teaching to the body of Christ and sponsors two ministry homes, one in Uganda and one in Ukraine.
I was pleased to find out that Lifechangers had produced a video Christmas card this year, featuring Bob and his wife, Judith. You can view that video here. (YouTube also has a 10-minute sample of a recent teaching by Bob. You can view that here.)
Now I do understand that the men listed had ministries that were to varying degrees controversial (Beall --- baptismal controversy; Smith --- twice-divorced; and Baxter and Mumford --- Shepherding/Discipleship controversy).
The benefits I reaped from their ministries, however, had nothing to do with those controversies. I learned early in life the necessity of adhering to the old adage: "chew the meat and spit out the bones." Their ministries blessed me by taking the Scriptures seriously and presenting them in an interesting manner. I saw in each of them a sincere effort to "rightly divide the word of truth."
.
Beall and Mumford kept their audiences interested by using humor in their teaching on practical Christian living. Baxter was a wordsmith with soaring rhetoric, and Smith had the gift of being deep and clear at the same time (not such an easy task, I submit).

There was a roughly two-year period in my life where Mumford's Tape-of-the-Month did much to sustain my spiritual life. All the controversy swirling about his ministry did nothing to abate my excitement each month when the tape arrived. That's because the tapes were not so much --- as some might suppose --- indoctrination into the Shepherding/Discipleship movement, as they were teachings on how to live out the abundant life Christ has provided for His people. (It is my understanding that one encountered the troublesome aspects of the Shepherding/Discipleship teaching in meetings that were "closed" to those not in covenant with that movement.)
Mumford also radiated a joy that had to be seen to be fully appreciated. I only saw him preach once --- in Bay City, Michigan --- but I came away from that evening with more than just some good 'meat' from his teaching (the Lord used Bob's sermon to correct a surly and ungrateful attitude I had been fostering). I also was struck by how truly happy the man looked.
That joy was underscored for me when I found out later that Mumford was at that very time on the losing end of a large lawsuit (you can read the details here). As I recall his words that night, there was no plea for money (none!), no snide remarks about his opponent in the lawsuit, in fact, nothing said about the lawsuit at all --- how different from the antics of many preachers today. But, there was that countenance that indicated a deep peace and joy within.
To be sure, Bob Mumford and his ministerial brethren in the Shepherding/Discipleship Movement
(pictured to the left) made some serious errors. Bob owned up to his errors in the January/February 1990 issue of Ministry Today magazine (the stark cover featured his words in yellow, sitting on a black background: "Discipleship was wrong. I repent. I ask forgiveness.")

But, more importantly, Bob Mumford stayed true to his Lord and Savior. He is finishing the course strongly. I am thankful for him.

It is so refreshing to read a positive comment about Bob Mumford. We were part of the Shepherding movement and lived in the rural south, steeped in well meaning religion. We, like yourself, had some very tough circumstances in our lives and were in our early 20's at the time. Being human, I personally believe that it is impossible to disciple people that you have never known before who live hundreds of miles away. Enough said about that. We have always seen this experience in our lives as the grace of God extended to us through the very sound teachings of Bob Mumford, Derek Prince and Ern Baxter. The foundations that they laid in our lives have helped to guide us and our children these last 33 and a half years. All 3 of our children are saved and walking with the Lord. Our 2 sons are in ministry situations and are sold out to His purpose in their lives as we are. I still remember their families in my prayers from time to time and have grown to know through the experience that no matter what happens, IF we trust Him, He is faithful to use any set of circumstances in our lives to draw us into a more intimate relationship with Him. Often by letting people who may seem to have no regard for you squeeze the juice out of your grapes to expose those things that need to go. It was worth it all to us to have full access to their teachings. And agree that it was their heart to "rightly divide the Word of God." Sincerely, Joyce Ivy
Joyce, thank you for the heartfelt note. You and your family stand as part of the testimony to the Holy Spirit's ministry through brothers Baxter, Mumford, and many others, I am sure.
Thanks again.
Your brother,
Jon
I echo Joyce Ivy's comments, and I am also thankful that through some passing of time, the positive is being revealed. We, also, were part of the Shepherding/Discipleship Movement over 30 years ago, in Alabama and in Texas, and I can truthfully and honestly say that the solid Christian principles and foundations we were taught, living our lives pleasing to our Lord and Savior, is the reason we are still married after 36 years, and our four children are all saved, baptized, and filled with the Holy Spirit. Their lives are given to serving the Lord, two attend Bible College, one to be a Christian Counselor, the other and her husband, obtaining their doctorates to minister with accountability. We all need accountability and right relationship to God and to man. We all need mentoring and pastoring. Young people need to know how to be good sons and daughters, husbands and wives, Fathers and Mothers, neighbors and employees. Our lives should reflect honesty, integrity, willingness to serve, and holiness to our Lord. This way, others will see and believe. I've told many people that it was God teaching us how to live the Christian life through these 5 men of God (Charles Simpson, Derek Prince, Bob Mumford, Ern Baxter, Don Basham), providing the invisible substance to endure, to stand, to raise our children for Him. I feel now that the Shepherding/Discipleship Movement was a prophetic movement--before it's time. The scriptural songs we sang and the preparation we received were for our personal present and future, but also for future times, for end time. Because of all the negative publicity and reactions, we've chosen to 'hide our identity' in any church we attend because the terms Shepherding and Discipleship are 'no-no's. I think it is possible that it isn't the Lord who hushed and continually hushes a very good thing! It is interesting to watch the Holy Spirit revealing through prophetic voices right now, the scriptures and teachings that we learned and walked in over 30 years ago. I can see the world becoming more chaotic, in need of the Lord, and in need of practical, hands-on, one-on-one help of how to order our lives righteously. I hope that God is resurrecting the true purpose of the Shepherding/Discipleship Movement--"Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done On Earth As It Is In Heaven." It is what we need in times such as these, being good stewards of what God has given us. Our family is prepared, thanks to the pastors and their wives who layed down their lives, loved us as their own, and taught us how to love God and each other.
I scrolled down below Joyce's comment, blessed to see and listen to Lenny LeBlanc sing 'We all Bow Down.' We attend Faith Church, where Lenny leads worship.
Thanks for the testimony, Sue!
Though I was never in a group that was covenanted with any of the five leaders you mentioned, I listened to many tapes by all (but Basham). I was ministered to.
I thank the Lord for those men.
A couple of years ago, Charles and Bob were reconciled when Charles invited Bob to speak at his leadership conference. You can get the CDs from Charles' website: www.csmpublishing.com. The product number is: D117P. There are seven CDs featuring Charles, Bob, Ken Sumrall, and Terry Virgo (from the U. K.) It was great to hear their voices again.
Thanks again, Sue!
P. S. Lenny Leblanc is one of my very favorite worship leaders. I have seen him at the Kingdom Bound festival in New York. I will soon be posting another of his videos.
Brother Jon, I was one of the casualties of the dicipleship movement. I lived in Fort Lauderdale from 1974 thru the early 1980's. My testimony was published in New Wine in Jan. 1976. I knew all the teachers personaly. The problem was not with them but with the undersheperds. When the movement come to an end many of us realized that our sheperds had taken the place of Jesus. In Him, Mike
Mike,
Thank you for taking the time to write.
It is very sad to me that what these brothers meant for good did not always turn out good.
I had a very wise older pastor say to me of the Ft Lauderdale Five that they "were trying to achieve sanctification (in their followers) by a methodology (rather than the Holy Spirit)." I believe he was correct.
Thanks again, Mike.
Jon, I totally agree. What was hard is the fact that we had the deepest fellowship, the wonder of God's presence, the reality of His anointing, the excitement that God was on the move and when it came to an end we were lost. I flounder for 5 years and then I started attending Calvary Chapel. Their teaching of scripture verse by verse has helped me see God more clearly in His word. I now feel grounded in the word and not in a method, But I miss His presence in the services. Oh for the days when His holiness would sweep over the congregation and as one people we would humble ourselves before Him, surrendering to His Spirit, bathed in His love, crying Yes Lord, Yes Lord here am I. In Him, Mike
Like what I have been reading about on the sheparding movement, I saw the 5 of them at different times. But all I can say is that they open my eyes to the Kingdom of God and not just being born again. But to a way of life. I am and you brothers and sisters are accountable to the Lord to see if those things are true, Not people.
As far as Iam concern Iam very thanful for each of their input in my life, I would not be where Iam if I had not heard them put their life out there for us.
Thank you Robert
Robert,
Thank you for reading here and your comments. I agree with the sentiments you expressed.
There are two books you maybe interested to read: one is The Shepherding Movement: Controversy and Charismatic Ecclesiology by Seth David Moore http://tinyurl.com/3h8x9as and the other is, Derek Prince: A Biographyby Stephen Mansfield.
Your brother,
Jon
"acceptance of personal responsibility is the first step in accepting Gods' grace for change". I heard that in 1974 when Bob Mumford was speaking in Alex. Va. I've had the quote on my refrigerator or on my dashboard ever since. He and Derek Prince had the most influence on my christain walk, along with Watchman Nee books. The dicipleship/ sheparding I recieved in the early 80's helped me greatly. A good shepard is simply a mature christian to pray and counsel with. In the long run I still believe in "sheparding". I wish our church had it today.
To the anonymous commenter above:
There can be no argument that there is a legitimate ministry of shepherding. Peter tells elders in Asia Minor, "Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care ...." 1 Peter 5:2.
The same is true of the term, discipleship. Jesus told the Eleven, "... go and make disciples, ...." (Matthew 28:19). So, it is appropriate to speak of Christian discipleship.
However, the type of charismatic church leadership in the 1970s that came to be known by the labels, Shepherding or Discipleship, was evidently instrumental in causing much harm.
Bob was correct in apologizing for any type of abusive system that caused harm to the flock of God.
I met Bob and Eric Mumford in Cookeville TN when they held a seminar at the peach tree learning center. My dad tossed me 3 of Bobs books several months earlier and they were all written in the late 60's early 70's. After I finished reading all of them not knowing who Bob was I said I my dad "it would have been nice to have met this guy Bob... He really hit the nail on the head back then to what is going in now in our society and with me personally".
Well to my surprise dad sent me a link to a seminar they were having in a month about an hour away from
my house! Not only was Bob still alive he said but you can still meet him if you go to the seminar!
The devil attempted to prevent me from attending by putting in my head that all the people there would be over the hill aged and I would look silly being the youngest single guy there. The Lord had different plans though and I called and signed up to go anyway.
Let me just say that I had the most incredible time learning things about agape, the fusion of the trinity, and getting out of the Eros trap than I could have ever imagined. I ended up purchasing all the plumb lines they print with multiple copies so I could share what I learned with others.
Bob personally put his arm around me and looked me in the eyes saying if there was anything he could do to serve me, please do not hesitate to ask... WOW.
I am 36, single, never married, no kids yet and was looking to meet a girl there who might want to get married... Lol.
What I found was something priceless.
God had put so many questions into my head and inward crying "what a wretched man I am" before unmet with Bob and Eric at that seminar. The Lor did that so he could answer and set me free from a lot of things going on in my life.
I have never met a sweeter, more loving individual than these two guys. They are right on about Agape and Kingdom Living that it's ramarkable to behold. The difference between understanding the Eros vs. Aape paradigm is not only eye opening but a revival inside you taking place.
For the $60 bucks it cost for the seminar I have recieved a priceless education and felt the Holy Spirit moving in that learning center room like never before. The Lord is working with individuals, not with large congregations. God wants a personal relationship with His sons and Daughters. The church age is over in my opinion and where 2 or 3 are gathered in my name there I AM in the midst is evident.
The Holy Spirit is blessing Bob and Eric in these last days and if anyone gets the chance to "see an hear" them in person I promise you one thing:
Your heart will be changed and your mind will be renewed.
Bob is a true "spiritual poppa bear" and I am so grateful for obeying the Lord and having been blessed to meet him and his son Eric.
May anyone reading this understand :)
With love and gratitude,
Sebastian Jacobson
Sebastian,
Thank you so much for your great post about reading Bob's literature and then meeting him.
Bob, in my opinion, is a humble and gifted servant of the Lord Jesus. Glad to hear that he is still ministering life to others in the Spirit's power.
I would just like to add that though churches (large and small) often fail people, the life-giving ones are simply comprised of people who are in process --- just as you and I are. The Lord loves and blesses his people with his presence were he is truly being sought (again, in large or small settings).
Thanks again for writing, my brother,
JON
